I am fascinated by jewelry. I want to see how it is made, its texture, does it move, what materials were used. All the things that define it as jewelry intrigue me!
We humans have a long history with jewelry. From the childhood dandelion ring to the more formal wedding ring, jewelry plays a part in our lives. The human race has always found the need to adorn itself. Whether to protect with a talisman, to show wealth or status or to simply beautify the wearer, jewelry has been present and important.
For me jewelry making is a form of engineering. I am intrigued by the multitude of forms metals can take. The dimension that can be achieved by manipulating a rigid material from the flat into the sculptural presents a challenge. The fascination of seeing a design evolve from my imagination, to paper drawings, to actuality, is a process that involves all my senses.
How am I going to achieve my vision? Will the positive and negative spaces achieve visual balance?
What techniques must I use to create my concept? Will the end result be an eloquent piece that will fulfill the wearers need for self expression? Although I create to fulfill my own needs to express beauty, jewelry also has to appeal to the esthetics of the wearer.
Using my own unique style to create a wearable object that delights and intrigues is the culmination of my process. That euphoria of transforming my vision into a reality is the ultimate fulfillment.
